FaceBook and Online Healthcare-Related Ads (June 2010)

Pharma companies are starting to be brave enough to use FaceBook as an advertising medium to reach the Canadian market.  This month, Bayer, Merck Serono, McNeil Consumer Healthcare and other healthcare organizations targeted me with FaceBook ads.  An detailed analysis of the campaign surrounding the Real MS Voices ad (by Merck Serono and Merck) can be found here:

Non-profit organizations continue to use FaceBook as an advertising avenue:

Medical providers also use FaceBook advertising with the hope of finding new clients:

Miscellaneous others:

And a few healthcare-related ads that I spotted on my Yahoo account (all of which I believe would be ideal for promotion via social media advertising and other activities):

Previous posts on FaceBook healthcare-related ads that targeted my FaceBook profile can be found here, here, here, here, here and here.

This post is by no means an endorsement of any of the products or services depicted in the ads, nor is it a critique of the ads themselves.

  1. Hi Natalie
Are you sure the NHPs you showed are actually approved by Health Canada? Health Canada has been receiving many complaints thee days about NHP ads.

    Ray

    • Hi Ray, I have not investigated whether the ads have been approved by Health Canada. You are the expert, so I will give you a call to see if we can put something together to give guidance on this. Many thanks for the comment.

  2. Thanks for sharing this. Will keep my eyes peeled for UK ads on FB. I haven’t spotted any so health specific that I can recall. As FB ads can be so targeted I may fall outside a target demographic. As a 37 year old male I doubt I would have seen any of the ads presented above.

    • Thanks Neil. My husband does not see many of the ads that I see, so demographics of the FaceBook profile sure do make a difference. I would love to see the healthcare-related ads that are targeted to your profile. If you share them on your blog, I would be happy to link to it. Let me know.

  3. can anyone does this advertisement from indian pharmaceutical company too?

    • Hi Meenu, anybody who has a FaceBook profile can set up a FaceBook ad. You can target the demographic that best suits your business needs. The targeting for FaceBook ads is a bit different than regular online advertisement in that you target based on the users’ profile (ie. demographics, geography, likes and interests), and not search keywords. Here is a link http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=863 where you can get some targeting info from FaceBook themselves. Hope this helps.

  4. I am member of Facebook but I have a limited friends (3) . I only members of Social Relation Links like LinkedIn and I select groups that I have a specific interest in, like CCPE-CFPC. So, I know that the info or any advertising or discussion topics that I will receive will be of interest to me. Also in this kind of group my contribution may be of help to colleagues. It is time to target our activities on internet and be more selective than Facebook, Twitter or other large relation link.

    • Salut Robert. Thank you for the comment. There certainly are many targeted groups online that meet our needs, and we definitely could learn a lot by being members of these as long as the members are active within the group.

  5. Bonjour Nat: I agree, members partcipation is key to the value of a online group or blog. As members you cannot only count on others idea, you have to expose your own. You won’t get anything if you are not putting something in. Another key factor for the success of an online group, like any other human activity, is feedback, it is posivite reinforcement, like you do.
